    A Nonprofit Board Development Plan for the Cleveland County Abuse Prevention Council

    The purpose of this consultancy was to assist in the transformation of the Cleveland County Abuse Prevention Council (CCAPC) from a director-led organization (governance model) to a board-directed (support model) organization through the development of an active, effective Board of Directors . The mission of CCAPC is, “to serve as a bridge between being a victim to becoming a survivor of domestic violence, sexual assault and homelessness through the provision of safe shelter, advocacy, support services, and preventive education.” After 4 years of securing grants, loans, and private donations through a “Building Hope capital campaign,” CCAPC was poised to break ground on a new facility that would house both the administrative staff and shelter residents in one location. In the fall of 2016, the Board of Directors was faced with dwindling Board membership and no plan for raising the funds needed to finish the interiors and furnish the new facility. Recognizing that grants rarely cover interior finishes or furniture, the Board of Directors embarked on a “Building Hope Phase II” campaign to raise the funds needed. Based on data derived from the Casey Foundation’s Nonprofit Board Capacity Survey and a SWOT analysis, CCAPC created a strategic plan for its Board of Directors. Utilizing a board development model that emphasized active, involved members who focused on resource development beyond grants and government funds, the Board shifted from a “policy” governance board to an effective, “support” board that assisted in fundraising and served as ambassadors to the community (Masaoka, 2011). The goal was to develop an effective Board of Directors that would create a strategic plan for the long-term financial and programmatic sustainability of the organization. This was accomplished through the creation of active board committees focused on adding new members (nominating committee), community awareness (communications committee), and resource development (fundraising committee). Over a 24-month period, the CCAPC Board expanded from seven active members to 17 members; created a new website, logo, letterhead, and capital campaign documents; and expanded funding resources beyond state and federal grants by $230,000 to complete Phase II of the capital campaign. The new CCAPC facility opened in June 2018

    Leader self-sacrifice and leadership effectiveness: The moderating role of leader prototypicality

    Self-sacrificing behavior of the leader and the extent to which the leader is representative of the group (i.e., group prototypical) are proposed to interact to influence leadership effectiveness. The authors expected self-sacrificing leaders to be considered more effective and to be able to push subordinates to a higher performance level than non-self-sacrificing leaders, and these effects were expected to be more pronounced for less prototypical leaders than for more prototypical leaders. The results of a laboratory experiment showed that, as expected, productivity levels, effectiveness ratings, and perceived leader group-orientedness and charisma were positively affected by leader self-sacrifice, especially when leader prototypicality was low, The main results were replicated in a scenario experiment and 2 surveys

    Two experiments tested hypotheses, derived from social identity and self-categorization theories, regarding the attribution of charisma to leaders. In Experiment I (N = 203), in-group prototypical leaders were attributed greater levels of charisma and were perceived to be more persuasive than in-group non-prototypical leaders. In Experiment 2 (N = 220), leaders described with in-group stereotypical characteristics were attributed relatively high levels of charisma regardless of their group-oriented versus exchange rhetoric. Leaders described with out-group stereotypical characteristics, however, had to employ group-oriented rhetoric to be attributed relatively high levels of charisma. We conclude that leadership emerges from being representative of 'us'; charisma may, indeed, be a special gift, but it is one bestowed on group members by group members for being representative of, rather than distinct from, the group itself. © 2006 The British Psychological Society

    Rewarding Leadership and Fair Procedures as Determinants of Self-Esteem

    In the present research, the authors examined the effect of procedural fairness and rewarding leadership style on an important variable for employees: self-esteem. The authors predicted that procedural fairness would positively influence people's reported self-esteem if the leader adopted a style of rewarding behavior for a job well done. Results from a scenario experiment, a laboratory experiment, and an organizational survey indeed show that procedural fairness and rewarding leadership style interacted to influence followers' self-esteem, such that the positive relationship between procedural fairness and self-esteem was more pronounced when the leadership style was high in rewarding behavior. Implications in terms of integrating the leadership and procedural fairness literature are discussed

    Creativity and bipolar disorder: Touched by fire or burning with questions?

    Substantial literature has linked bipolar disorder with creative accomplishment. Much of the thinking in this area has been inspired by biographical accounts of poets, musicians, and other highly accomplished groups, which frequently document signs of bipolar disorder in these samples. A smaller literature has examined quantitative measures of creativity among people with bipolar disorder or at risk for the disorder. In this paper, we provide a critical review of such evidence. We then consider putative mechanisms related to the link of bipolar disorder with creativity, by drawing on literature outside of bipolar disorder on personality, motivational, and affective predictors of creativity. Because so little research has directly evaluated whether these factors could help explain the elevations of creativity in bipolar disorder, we conclude with an agenda for future research on the theoretically and clinically compelling topic of creativity in bipolar disorder

    Pregnane-X-receptor mediates the anti-inflammatory activities of rifaximin on detoxification pathways in intestinal epithelial cells

    International audienceThe pregnane-X-receptor (PXR) is master gene overseeing detoxification of wide number of xenobiotics and is critical for maintenance of intestinal integrity. The intestinal expression of genes involved in cellular detoxification is down-regulated in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Rifaximin, is a non absorbable antibiotic endowed with a PXR agonistic activity. In the present study we have investigated whether rifaximin activates PXR in primary human colon epithelial cells and human colon biopsies and assessed whether this antibiotic antagonizes the effect of Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α on expression of PXR and PXR-related genes. Present results demonstrate that primary colon epithelial cells express PXR and that their exposure to rifaximin induces the expression of genes involved in cellular detoxification. Exposure to TNFα reduces the expression of PXR mRNA as well as expression of its target genes. This inhibitory effect was prevented by that co-treatment with rifaximin. Knocking down the expression of PXR in colon epithelial cells by an anti-PXR siRNA, abrogated the counter-regulatory effects exerted by rifaximin on cell exposed to TNFα. Finally, exposure of colon biopsies obtained from ulcerative colitis patients to rifaximin increased the expression of genes involved in xenobiotics metabolism. In aggregate, these data illustrate that rifaximin increases the expression of PXR and PXR-regulated genes involved in the metabolism and excretion of xenobiotics and antagonized the effects of TNFα in intertsinal epithelial cells and colon biopsies. These non-antibiotic effects of rifaximin could contribute to the maintenance of the intestinal barrier integrity against xenobiotics and products generated by luminal bacteria

    Medial gastrocnemius muscle stiffness cannot explain the increased ankle joint range of motion following passive stretching in children with cerebral palsy.

    Stretching is often used to increase/maintain joint range of motion (ROM) in children with cerebral palsy (CP) but the effectiveness of these interventions is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the acute changes in muscle-tendon lengthening properties that contribute to increased ROM after a bout of stretching in children with CP. Eleven children with spastic CP (age:12.1(3)y, 5/6 hemiplegia/diplegia, 7/4 GMFCS level I/II) participated in this study. Each child received 3 sets of 5 × 20 s passive, manual static dorsiflexion stretches separated by 30 s rest, and 60 s rest between sets. Pre- and immediately post-stretching, ultrasound was used to measure medial gastrocnemius fascicle lengthening continuously over the full ROM and an individual common ROM pre- to post-stretching. Simultaneously, 3D motion of two marker clusters on the shank and the foot was captured to calculate ankle angle, and ankle joint torque was calculated from manually applied torques and forces on a 6DoF load cell. After stretching, ROM was increased (9.9° (12.0), P = 0.005). Over a ROM common to both pre and post measurements, there were no changes in fascicle lengthening or torque. The maximal ankle joint torque tolerated by the participants increased (2.9(2.4) Nm, P = 0.003) and at this highest passive torque maximal fascicle length was 2.8(2.4) mm greater (P = 0.009) when compared to before stretching. These results indicate that the stiffness of the muscle fascicles in children with CP remain unaltered by an acute bout of stretching. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved

    Total Serum Bilirubin within 3 Months of Hepatoportoenterostomy Predicts Short-Term Outcomes in Biliary Atresia

    OBJECTIVES: To prospectively assess the value of serum total bilirubin (TB) within 3 months of hepatoportoenterostomy (HPE) in infants with biliary atresia as a biomarker predictive of clinical sequelae of liver disease in the first 2 years of life. STUDY DESIGN: Infants with biliary atresia undergoing HPE between June 2004 and January 2011 were enrolled in a prospective, multicenter study. Complications were monitored until 2 years of age or the earliest of liver transplantation (LT), death, or study withdrawal. TB below 2 mg/dL (34.2 μM) at any time in the first 3 months (TB <2.0, all others TB ≥ 2) after HPE was examined as a biomarker, using Kaplan-Meier survival and logistic regression. RESULTS: Fifty percent (68/137) of infants had TB < 2.0 in the first 3 months after HPE. Transplant-free survival at 2 years was significantly higher in the TB < 2.0 group vs TB ≥ 2 (86% vs 20%, P < .0001). Infants with TB ≥ 2 had diminished weight gain (P < .0001), greater probability of developing ascites (OR 6.4, 95% CI 2.9-14.1, P < .0001), hypoalbuminemia (OR 7.6, 95% CI 3.2-17.7, P < .0001), coagulopathy (OR 10.8, 95% CI 3.1-38.2, P = .0002), LT (OR 12.4, 95% CI 5.3-28.7, P < .0001), or LT or death (OR 16.8, 95% CI 7.2-39.2, P < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: Infants whose TB does not fall below 2.0 mg/dL within 3 months of HPE were at high risk for early disease progression, suggesting they should be considered for LT in a timely fashion. Interventions increasing the likelihood of achieving TB <2.0 mg/dL within 3 months of HPE may enhance early outcomes
